CEO of your household and your business
French Polynesian Adventures

March 23, 2021

Two of the most rewarding and the most challenging roles women take on are being the CEO of your family and your own business. During the pandemic most of us had to make it all work somehow, tackle the transition from moving our office into the home, home schooling kids, juggling conference calls and laundry, zoom meetings with dogs barking, children needing help with school and preparing meals way more often. Our days were interrupted at every turn and our professional worlds collided into our family life, but we found a way to thrive and do both!

The reason being that both are full time commitments that require perseverance, patience and massive multitasking. Doing one or the other can be tough enough on their own but when they are tangled up it forced us to rise and take on the challenge.

Being in the C-Suite requires leadership skills that are remarkably similar to that of being an exceptional mom. We manage our business, and we manage our households. It is hard. But we are tougher. Obviously, we can’t fire our kids, or right them up, we have to learn from them just like we have to learn from our staff that we manage in our professional world. Perhaps we became better moms because of it! The grocery shopping, meal planning, house cleaning, dishes, the laundry, dog walking, teaching, driving, planning, organizing…the duties are plentiful. Just like we rely on our teams and committees at the office, we had to rely and delegate within our household. Were we effective? That depends on how we executed the strategy. It is why mothers make such successful CEO’s we can handle almost everything and anything!

Moms must be flexible, have mental complexity, monster organizational skills, clear communication skills, and ride a roller coaster at the same time. We can solve a crisis, navigate chaos and figure it all out – parallel to a C-Suite partner.

To all the STELLARGIRL moms who are both the CEO’s of their households and their businesses, are simply STELLAR!

Stories told and unfold for International Women’s Day
French Polynesian Adventures

March 2, 2021

Celebrating women is what STELLARGIRL is all about. March is International Women’s History Month and March 8th being International Women’s Day, I want to share some inspiring stories of women I have met throughout my travels.

My wanderlust has taken me to over 40 countries and what has always brought me so much joy is meeting, learning and laughing with the women from the places I’ve travelled. I spent 2 weeks in Ukraine as a folkorique dancer, I’ve toured throughout Europe, Iceland, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Morocco, Thailand, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, to name some highlightsand what I found is that women have more in common than not. What starts many of our conversations? Well….it is usually centered around fashion and style. Either I will seek out independent clothing or jewelry boutiques, local designers are my favorite or shop and walk the local markets and be enchanted by their energy and love of fashion. Also, walking around (that’s the best way to see a new city) will entice a conversation and I will compliment a women on her outfit or vice versa and voila instant connection!

One story in particular, in Japan, the “Coming of Age Day” is a Japanese holiday and held annually on the 2nd Monday of January. It is when a woman reaches 20 years of age (between April of the previous year to April 1 of the current year). They dress in the most spectacular furisode’s (kimono) and zori sandals. I was in Toyko that week and at the Asakusa Shrine and the Sensoji Temple, the women were magical. They shared their stories with me, they wanted to take photos, they love their culture with intense passion and they have tremendous hope for their futures. A week I will never forget.

The women in Thailand and Vietnam are a mix of vulnerability and strength and are incredibly sweet. They shared stories of their family traditions, food, flowers and love of life. The local women would also want to hear where I am from and want to learn about Canada (btw I am Canadian and moved to the US in 2005)…. but it is listening and learning from women all over the world that all have hope for the future and all love sharing their cultures and traditions. Women forever inspire me and that is stellar!

Accessories are a total mood lifter
French Polynesian Adventures

February 16, 2021

Accessories can take an outfit from ordinary to extraordinary.  Also, they are one of the most affordable ways to keep up with the trends or to feel more refined. For me I don’t “match” my metals (I wear both yellow gold and silver on the same wrist), I never match my belt with my shoes and I rarely wear one necklace at a time.

However, accessories can be just for fun, make a bold statement or they can have tremendous sentimental meaning. I have an antique pendant necklace that was my grandmothers that has been in 4 drivers licenses and 3 passport pictures. I have a gold bracelet I haven’t taken off in 6 years, I wear the same thin gold toe ring that I got in Hawaii 15 years ago. I accessorize with costume jewelry, real gold, or diamond studs that I never take off. I select high- and low-end rotation items that I wear on repeat. I used to wear scarves, don’t know why I stopped…..also being super busy I find it a hassle to change up my handbag, so I usually stick with a cross body bag to keep my hands free. Yet, I do change up evening bags on vacation when I have more time and different places to go.

Are you a luxury, logo lover? Or a simple understated dresser? You can “hide” yourself or be mysterious behind a large pair of sunglasses.  You can cover up a bad hair day with a hat or show support for your favorite sports team by wearing their logoed baseball cap. Maybe you collect hats with the city written on the brim or the college you went to. Or perhaps you wear a head covering that is a part of your culture or religion and it is a “piece” of you.

I feel naked without my jewelry. It is symbolic and gives me peace. It is a “part” of me. Sneakers, boots, heels, mules, slides….yes, they are accessories but that will be an entire new blog of its own! But they are equally important. I sometimes base my entire look on my footwear….

Ok, back to the topic at hand…I do have something to share that’s on my bucket list… I can’t wait to head to the Kentucky Derby and wear an outlandish derby hat. Or even enjoy the weekend of festivities and dress up with more than one chic headpiece. Hmm, do I go for the traditional bowler hat, aka the billycock hat, or a cartwheel hat? Options…and that is why accessories are so much fun!

Thanksgiving Style
Set aside the sweatpants for Thanksgiving!

November 19, 2020
Stellargirls,

Every Thanksgiving is about being thankful and grateful for all our blessings in life. Our friends, family, pets, our health and happiness should never be taken for granted. As we continue to be affected by the pandemic and confusion over celebrating with our own household or having big family gathering, we should still celebrate joy, love, laughter and our support for each other!

I believe that choosing happiness in whatever form that is for you,  I think that Thanksgiving deserves some personal style!  Let’s all put the quarantine sweatsuits to the side next Thursday and put on a picture worthy outfit and smile!

Love,
Teri

Sacred Secret Scent
Sacred, secret scent!

November 3, 2020
Stellargirls,

My sacred secret relationship.

Whenever I go to “order again” on my amazon app, I never think perhaps I should change up my signature scent, try something new, check out the best sellers. Nope, not a chance in h@#.  I’ve read enough fashion magazines to smear the paper sample from the ad pages over my wrists thinking maybe this could be the one. But, I always regret it. I shop at enough department store beauty counters and get spritzed enough to know they will never compare!

There is one consistency in my life, my perfume, my longest relationship other than with my family. Actually, it isn’t even perfume, it’s “eau de toilette”. Which translates to “toilet water” in English but as a bilingual Canadian and a lover of Parisian culture, it actually means “grooming water”. The real difference is that “eau de toilette” is diluted with alcohol and usually lasts about 2 hours and costs less. Perfume is more potent, and it is supposed to “throw” it’s scent up to 24 hours.

You know how smells and scents remind you of something or someone?  Like how my Babi’s (my Ukrainian grandmother) house either smelled of cinnamon buns or cabbage…yes she made the best, I mean the best cinnamon buns. They didn’t need frosting or butter or anything. They were divine. Purely perfect. She also made Holubtsi, which are cabbage rolls. Tightly rolled rice (sometimes with ground pork) in a leaf of cabbage and baked to perfection in either tomato sauce or bacon fat….now how did I get from perfume to bacon fat? Ok, I’m getting off topic but you get the point. By the way, gardenias remind me of Hawaii….ok now I’m done…back to toilet water, I mean grooming water…my longtime friends, past boyfriends, even colleagues in an elevator (you know who you are!) will know when I walk by…

My long-time sacred love scent is with Jean Paul Gaultier Classique. Now through the years the company has tried to improve upon it, but like my Babi’s cinnamon buns, nothing compares to the original. Gaultier’s Classique debuted in 1993. I was in college and remember seeing the packaging, a silver tin cylinder, a red imitation velvet insert holding this sexy glass figure containing the most glorious scent. I saved my tips as a waitress and bought it from a sweet sales lady with a peach sweater set at the Sears counter in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the first time.

The sexy bottle altered throughout the decades. The bodice of a women sometimes etched with flowers or lace detail over the glass; even boudoir legs attached upside down however I never fell for the “upgrade”. The perfumery reinvented it with names like, Scandal, SO Scandal, La Belle, or Cabaret… I stayed with the original. Classique.

When I go through duty free at the airport I still buy a few to stock up on.  I am panicked when I have ¼ left in my 3.4 ounce gorgeous bottle. It seems I will  never tire of it and after 27 years Jean Paul Gaultier Classique will always have a customer. My secret it out.

Love,
Teri

Maxi Skirts
I have a fashion crush…... I am obsessed with maxi skirts.

October 25, 2020

Stellargirls,

I have a fashion crush…… I am obsessed with maxi skirts.

My obsession began in ballet class when I was five. The students had to wear tights, a leotard, and a stiff itchy pink tutu, but my ballet mistress always wore a long, beautiful, flowy black wrap skirt. Her skirt cascaded when she gracefully chasséd around the dance floor. It twirled around her body when she spun into a pirouette. I never did follow in her career footsteps, but clearly she made a stylish impression!

My maxi skirt collection is, well, rather extensive. I couldn’t get them all in one photograph! One of my favorites is a raspberry and grape plumage vintage Valentino from Ebay. Yep, Ebay. My maxi skirts range from a twenty dollar black and white polka dot high waisted vintage gem that I purchased from the Randolph Street Market in Chicago to a spectacular knit Missoni I spotted in a store window in Florence.

Maxi skirts come in infinite options, from pleated to asymmetrical, a-line, slim, ruffled or a gown skirt with pockets that flatter all silhouettes. There is no limit on fabric choices either. From knit to chiffon, cotton, jersey, silk or rayon their wearability is solidified in any climate. You name the occasion and a maxi skirt never disappoints. I travel in them with my Golden Goose sneakers and a cashmere sweater. I zip one up and pair it with a crop top and head to brunch. I add some flips flops and my bikini top for a walk to the beach. I slide on booties over black fishnets with a rock ’n roll sweatshirt during the fall season. I can throw on a bomber, a cropped leather or even a jean jacket with a maxi when it’s chilly. I can even belt them ….or not. Endless options really. I  feel feminine, cool, sexy and comfortable, but now my adult version of a pink tutu is best suited with my stiletto Minolo’s  and olive army jacket for date night!

Clothes Call
Style isn’t just in the way we dress, it’s how you walk, talk and show who and what you are.

October 5, 2020
Stellargirls,
Style isn’t just in the way we dress, it’s how you walk, talk and show who and what you are.
Your style also shows through how you decorate your home, your office or what type of car or bike you have.
Stellargirl style speaks volumes without words, your clothes call to you and  make you “feel” a certain way. My bohemian glamour style can be twisted and touched up daily depending on my mood or where I am going or traveling to. But my car, my bike, my office, my home still screams “Teri “ because that is something I can’t change like my outfit.
My black Jeep Wangler with my Batman wheel cover; my yellow country cruiser with a basket (of course!);  my tufted yet super oversized comfy furniture in my classic home still has “Teri touches” like subtle rustic and industrial furnishings that also define me. I love framed photos of my family throughout the main hallways. I have a travel wall with ornate frames to compliment the country in the photo; a classic glass display case with vintage frames of my parents and grandparents wedding photos;
a suede wall to pin up the ever changing artwork of my four young children! Even our beach themed powder room is covered in black and white photos of the kids on every beach we’ve vacationed to!
Stellargirls, be YOU in everything you do!
Love,
Teri

Dear Stellargirls
A piece of clothing tells a story when you can revisit the place where you found it just by putting it on or pulling out of your closet. When I travel, I purposefully seek out locally owned boutiques so that whenever I put on that piece of jewelry from Dubai, my favorite sundress from Ibiza, or my leather and fur crop jacket from Florence, I am instantly transported back to that special time and place, and all the wonderful memories that come along with it. Finding your personal style reveals genuine authenticness without saying a word.

October 1, 2020

Dear Stellargirls,

A piece of clothing tells a story when you can revisit the place where you found it just by putting it on or pulling out of your closet. When I travel, I purposefully seek out locally owned boutiques so that whenever I put on that piece of jewelry from Dubai, my favorite sundress from Ibiza, or my leather and fur crop jacket from Florence, I am instantly transported back to that special time and place, and all the wonderful memories that come along with it. Finding your personal style reveals genuine authenticness without saying a word.

I look at style separately from fashion. A fashion trend may or may not suit me but the experience of how a glamorous gown with the perfect stiletto can affect my demeanor, and translate into taking a fearless stride into a room is an influential feeling. Rockin out my favorite Old Gringo boots with my G-Star moto denim at a concert edifies my exhilaration and a style snapshot is taken. Fashion evolves with trends. Elements of fashion are woven into one’s personal style.

I am a curator of fashion. I buy an item of clothing because of a unique weave or an unexpected cut out in the fabric. I collect vintage clothing and jewelry as well as accrue iconic designers pieces like timeless art. When I purchase an accouterment from one of the students at the School of the Art Institute of Fashion in Chicago, I know it is the only one with no other duplicate in the collection. I am in awe of these young talented designers. They are stellar at their craft! The students were inspired to design by perhaps their ancestors, a sunset, a road trip, a doll collection, or a dream. Their vision was translated to fashion. I get to wear the designs that came to fruition from that mood board of inspiration and I do not take that for granted. I am blessed to cover my shoulders with their creations and to know what inspired them. This is one of the reasons style and fashion have a sacred place in my memory and my closet.

Dress for yourself.

Love,

Teri
